Michael Jackson was preparing for his concerts in London when his plans were cut short by his unexpected death on June 25. At one time these included recording a full album in Spanish, Panamanian singer Rubén Blades revealed.
The Central American celebrity told EFE that Jackson asked for his help to adapt the track “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” into Spanish, originally recorded in 1987. After several days in the studio, Jackson managed to record this ballad under the title “Todo mi amor eres tú.” Although the work was never publicized or sold by the King of Pop, “he pulled it off really well,” said the Panamanian salsa star.
“In reality, it was the only time Michael Jackson ever sang in Spanish,” said Blades to EFE. “Originally he wanted to do three songs,” explained the singer, but the project was never completed due to the hectic agendas of the two musicians.
A confidentiality agreement is often signed when this kind of joint work is made, but the Panamanian assures that this was unnecessary. “He wanted to do a full album, but the problem was that I couldn’t go to Australia for a year [to continue with the project],” he explained.
Blades recalled that Jackson “did a fantastic job” in Spanish in the studio they shared with U.S. music producer Quincy Jones and Chilean Humberto Gattica. “He looked at me and said, ‘Do you think I can do better?’ I said, ‘Yes,’ and we did it again with no problems. I was surprised that there was no entourage, there was nobody else: Quincy, Humberto, Michael and me,” said Blades.
Michael Jackson continues to cause a commotion one month since his death, attributed to a medicine overdose. According to AP, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has announced that it has determined the cause of death, but is waiting for the investigation to conclude before revealing it.
